Computerized Perimetry – Visual Field Testing

The visual field begins to narrow suddenly. The person reads, recognizes faces, and works at the computer. However, part of the side area gradually disappears from the visual field.

Computerized perimetry at "K+31" helps assess the visual field and detect changes that a standard visual acuity test does not reveal.

What is computer perimetry and what does it show?

A visual field examination is necessary to understand how the eye perceives space in front of and to the sides. The doctor evaluates the center, periphery, and symmetry between the eyes. They also assess areas of decreased sensitivity. This method helps identify visual field narrowing and helps identify visual loss and signs of damage to the visual pathways.

How the method works

The patient looks at the center of the device. Then, they press a button when they see a light stimulus. Automated perimetry:

  1. Records responses
  2. Generates a sensitivity map

The result depends on attention, fatigue, and gaze fixation, so the doctor explains the instructions in advance.

What parameters do we evaluate?

The doctor examines the boundaries of vision and the periphery. They identify asymmetries and defects in the visual field. If the area doesn't perceive the stimulus, the term "scotoma" may appear in the report.

The optic nerve's function is assessed separately, as is the stability of the retina's reception of signals. Early diagnosis is important. This is when there may be no complaints yet, but the map already shows the risk zone.

What is computer perimetry and what does it show?

How does computer perimetry differ from a regular vision test?

A table with letters shows visual acuity. Testing the field of view answers another question:

  1. Does the eye see the whole space?
  2. Are there any “blind” areas?
  3. Is there any narrowing of the side view?

At K+31, eye perimetry is often included in an extended ophthalmological examination, where data is compared with pressure, OCT and fundus examination.

Method What does it evaluate? When needed
Computer perimetry overview of the center and periphery suspicion of glaucoma, control
Visometry visual acuity basic technique
Ophthalmoscopy fundus retinal and nerve assessment

The table helps you quickly understand the difference. The doctor chooses the final route after examination.

General information

When we recommend computerized perimetry

We prescribe the test. This is precisely when complaints, examination findings, or an established diagnosis require a functional vision assessment. Sometimes a person doesn't notice a problem, but the doctor sees signs of risk. In this situation, an examination helps prevent obvious deterioration.

Suspected Glaucoma and Monitoring with an Established Diagnosis

If glaucoma is suspected, a pressure check alone is not enough. The doctor evaluates the nerve head, assesses the thickness of the nerve fibers, the patient's complaints, and the results of additional tests.

Static perimetry helps determine whether there are characteristic visual loss patterns. If a diagnosis is established, repeat charts show whether the readings are stable and whether therapy is helping. This is how the doctor assesses treatment control.

Complaints of visual field narrowing, "blind spots," or worsening peripheral vision

It's worth making an appointment if it becomes more difficult to notice objects to the side. Or if a dark area, "drops," or a feeling of narrowing vision has appeared. These can be signs of visual impairment due to ocular, vascular, and neurological causes. A sudden loss of vision, "curtains," flashes, pain, or rapid deterioration of vision require immediate in-person assistance.

Monitoring after injuries, surgeries, and diseases of the optic nerve and retina

After an eye or head injury, the doctor may order a visual field test to check the pathways. The test is also used after surgery and for diseases affecting the optic nerve or retina. It is important to detect the change and determine whether it remains stable.

When we recommend computerized perimetry

How the test is performed

In "K+31," diagnostics are performed without contact with the ocular surface. The patient sits at the device, follows the instructions, and informs the doctor if they are tired. A relaxed pace helps achieve more reliable results.

Preparing for the procedure

Complex preparation is usually not necessary. It is best to arrive rested, bring glasses or contact lenses, and inform the doctor about eye drops, surgeries, injuries, and chronic illnesses. If pain, swelling, or purulent discharge is present, inflammatory treatment may be necessary first.

Stages of computerized perimetry

First, the doctor explains the procedure and helps the patient assume the correct position. One eye is covered, while the other focuses on the central point. Light stimuli are then displayed, and the patient presses a button when they notice a signal. Threshold perimetry or kinetic perimetry may be used depending on the indications. The doctor chooses the regimen.

How long does the test take and is it painful?

The test typically takes a few minutes per eye. The entire appointment lasts longer because the doctor provides instructions, checks the reliability of the chart, and analyzes the results. The examination is painless because the device does not touch the eye. If the patient is tired or distracted, the test is sometimes repeated.

How the test is performed

What do computer perimetry results mean?

The results appear as a map with numbers, graphs, and areas of decreased sensitivity. It's not recommended to interpret the printout on your own. The same picture may have different meanings in patients with different diagnoses.

Scotomas, visual field narrowing and asymmetry

The doctor describes narrowing of the visual field, localized loss, differences between the eyes, and visual field defects. If a scotoma is detected, the specialist examines its:

  1. Shape
  2. Location
  3. Relationship with other data

A single area of decreased sensitivity does not necessarily equate to a definitive diagnosis.

When additional examinations are needed

If the chart raises questions, the doctor may order OCT, tonometry, fundus examination, ultrasound, neurological assessment, or other tests. The decision depends on the patient's complaints, age, and chart quality. Sometimes, a repeat visual field examination is necessary after a certain period of time.

Why is it important to evaluate the results over time?

One test shows the condition on the day of the examination. This dynamic analysis helps determine whether the process is stable and whether the visual field is changing over time. This is especially important for glaucoma, as treatment is aimed at preserving visual function.

What do computer perimetry results mean?

Why patients choose "K+31"

Diagnostics must be accurate and understandable. It's important for patients to know why the test was prescribed, what the chart showed, and what steps are needed next. At "K+31," we pay special attention to this.

Modern diagnostic equipment

We use modern equipment that performs the test according to the protocol and stores the results for comparison. The device evaluates the reliability of the answers, and the doctor checks the quality of the chart. This reduces the risk of erroneous conclusions due to fatigue or improper fixation.

Experienced ophthalmologists

The patient is managed by a team that deals with:

  • Glaucoma
  • Retinal diseases
  • Consequences of injuries and surgical changes

The doctor sees not only the printout but also the patient, their complaints and medical history. Therefore, the ophthalmological examination becomes more precise.

Clear interpretation of results and further action plan

After the test, the patient receives an explanation of the results and further action plan. The doctor explains the findings, the reliability of the chart, and when to return for a follow-up. If an ophthalmologist consultation is needed, it can be completed during the same visit.

Why patients choose "K+31"

Frequently asked questions about computerized perimetry

Is computerized perimetry painful?

No. The test is noninvasive, with no needles or eye contact. The patient looks at a light stimuli and presses a button as instructed by the doctor.

Is there any preparation needed for the test?

No special preparation is usually necessary. It's best to arrive rested, bring glasses or contact lenses, and inform the doctor about eye drops, surgeries, injuries, inflammation, pregnancy, and chronic illnesses.

What does computerized perimetry reveal?

This method shows how the eye perceives space in the center and periphery. It helps identify narrowing, loss of vision, and other changes associated with glaucoma, nerve damage, retinal damage, or visual pathways. The results are always assessed in conjunction with a physical examination.

How often should I have the test?

The frequency is determined by the doctor. If a disease is suspected, a repeat test may be necessary to confirm the findings. Once a diagnosis has been established, the intervals depend on the stage, stability of the results, and the chosen treatment.

How to sign up for an examination at K+31

How to sign up for an examination at K+31

This appointment is suitable for patients with complaints and those for whom a doctor has already recommended a follow-up. Don't wait if your lateral vision is deteriorating, blind spots have appeared, you've had an injury, there's a hereditary risk, or fundus changes have been previously detected.

Who should especially not delay an ophthalmological examination?

We recommend perimetry for patients with suspected glaucoma, with narrowed lateral vision, after eye or head injuries, with nerve diseases, retinal changes, and for post-treatment monitoring. This list does not necessarily indicate a diagnosis. It helps to check your functional vision in a timely manner.

Schedule and Consult a Specialist

At "K+31," you can consult with an ophthalmologist, undergo a painless examination using modern equipment, and receive clear interpretation of diagnostic results.

Schedule an appointment if your doctor has recommended perimetry, you have a complaint of visual impairment, or you need a glaucoma diagnosis. We will perform the test, explain the results, and advise you on your next course of action.
