Robotic surgery

Robotic surgery is a surgical procedure performed by a surgeon using a robotic system, which greatly increases the precision and safety of the procedure. The K+31 Clinic is equipped with the da Vinci robotic surgical system, which allows for complex surgeries to be performed through miniscule incisions. Since 2000, this technology has been widely used in medical practice worldwide and has become the gold standard for a wide range of surgical procedures.

What is the da Vinci robot?

The da Vinci system is a high-tech surgical system consisting of two main components:

  • The surgeon's console is an ergonomic workstation where the surgeon controls instruments using joysticks while viewing the surgical field through an enlarged 3D HD image.
  • The robotic arm is positioned directly next to the operating table. It has four "arms": a high-resolution camera and three surgical instruments that can flex in any direction with a range beyond the capabilities of the human hand.

The system transforms the surgeon's movements into smaller, more precise manipulations, eliminating natural hand tremors. The da Vinci instruments rotate 540°—significantly exceeding the capabilities of the human wrist, allowing surgery in the most difficult-to-reach anatomical areas.

How does robotic surgery work?

How does robotic surgery work?

  1. Preparation — the surgeon makes several tiny incisions (up to 8 mm) to insert instruments and a camera.
  2. Surgical intervention — the surgeon controls the da Vinci robotic arms from the console, tracking every step on a screen with an enlarged 3D image. All robotic actions are the surgeon's movements, translated in real time with increased accuracy.
  3. Continuous monitoring — a surgical assistant is always present with the patient. The robot does not perform any programmed actions.
  4. Completion — the punctures are closed; the minimal incisions ensure rapid healing.

General information

Robotic surgery in oncology

This technology is particularly valuable in oncologic surgery. Da Vinci allows:

  • Remove the entire malignant tumor, reducing the risk of recurrence
  • Preserve nerve endings and nearby healthy tissue
  • Minimize blood loss during surgery
  • Speed up the transition to the next stages of treatment (chemotherapy, radiation therapy)

Urological oncology is a prime example: the vast majority of prostate tumor removal surgeries in leading global clinics are now performed using a robotic system, and the rate of erectile function recovery after this type of surgery is higher than with traditional interventions.

FAQ

Does the robot operate autonomously?

No. The da Vinci robot is an instrument in the surgeon's hands. All manipulations are performed by the physician, and the system merely provides enhanced precision and visualization. There are no automated or programmed actions.

Who is suitable for robotic surgery?

Indications are determined by the surgeon after an examination. Robotic technology is applicable for most elective surgical procedures. Contraindications may include the need for emergency surgery or severe adhesions.

How long does recovery take?

On average, 1-3 weeks—significantly faster than after open surgery. Patients report minimal pain and can return to daily activities sooner.

Are there scars?

Incisions for robotic surgery are 8–12 mm. After healing, they are virtually invisible.

How safe is robotic surgery?

Numerous clinical studies confirm that robotic surgeries are associated with fewer complications, less blood loss, and faster recovery compared to open surgery.

What surgeries are most commonly performed using the da Vinci system?

The most common surgeries are in oncology (removal of tumors of various locations), urology (prostatectomy, nephrectomy), and gynecology (hysterectomy, myomectomy).
