What is a kidney ultrasound?

A kidney ultrasound, or simply ultrasound, is a non-invasive way to look inside the body and see these paired organs. A special machine sends out sound waves that bounce off the organs, creating an image on a screen.

The procedure is completely safe, painless, and takes little time. Doctors use ultrasound to check the shape, size, and position of the kidneys, as well as to identify potential problems such as stones, tumors, or inflammation. This diagnostic test is important for the early detection of diseases and the appropriate choice of treatment.

Indications for a kidney ultrasound

The kidneys are our body's filters, but the adjacent adrenal glands don't participate in fluid excretion, but they actively influence our well-being by producing important hormones. A kidney ultrasound also allows us to analyze the condition of the adrenal glands; any pathologies become visible on the machine's screen.

Ultrasound examination of the kidneys and adrenal glands helps doctors promptly identify dangerous disorders before they have a chance to develop. Signs that may help you suspect a problem include:

  • Back pain, especially below the ribs or above the pubic area
  • Acute attacks of renal colic
  • Frequent or difficult urination
  • Pain when going to the toilet
  • Sand or blood in the urine
  • Uncontrolled urine leakage
  • Sudden changes in blood pressure that are not relieved by conventional medications
  • Unexplained drop in blood pressure
  • Swelling of the arms, legs, or face
  • Sudden weight gain
  • General fatigue, muscle weakness
  • Appearance of stretch marks, age spots, changes in skin tone
  • Irregularities in menstrual cycles in women
  • Decreased male potency
  • Excessive body hair growth
  • Recent lumbar spine injury
  • Regular headaches
  • Changes in blood and urine tests

If you notice any warning signs, don't delay your visit to a specialist: early diagnosis can prevent serious complications and maintain your long-term health.

Restrictions and contraindications to kidney ultrasound

Kidney ultrasound is a simple and safe procedure that is prescribed to many patients. However, there are some points to consider.

Restrictions on kidney ultrasound:

  • Bladder emptying problems - if the bladder is empty, the kidney examination will be incomplete, so it is recommended to drink a glass of water about an hour before the procedure.
  • Gas in the intestines - a large amount of gas interferes with a clear view of the organs. To avoid this, it is recommended to follow a diet the day before, excluding foods that provoke gas formation.
  • Overweight - in obese people, it is more difficult to visualize the kidneys due to the layer of fat that weakens the ultrasound signal. Although this is not an absolute contraindication, sometimes an ultrasound in obese patients is uninformative, and additional testing is required.

There are no absolute contraindications to kidney ultrasound. It can be performed on pregnant women, children of any age, and people with chronic diseases. Even metal implants do not interfere with the procedure.

Preparing for a kidney ultrasound

To ensure the highest accuracy of kidney examination results, it is important to prepare for the procedure in advance using a number of simple recommendations to improve the quality of diagnosis. Before the ultrasound scan, it is crucial to have a full bladder and bowel movement, free of food debris and accumulated gases.

The preparatory phase includes the following steps:

  • Several days before the scheduled examination, you should review your diet, eliminating foods that increase intestinal gas production. These include black bread, baked goods, sweets, fatty meats, sausages, raw vegetables, and fruits. Avoid drinking soda, dairy products, and kvass.
  • About two days before the procedure, your doctor may recommend taking medications with an adsorbent effect.
  • The evening before, dinner should be light. Finish the meal no later than 7:00 PM. Taking a mild laxative is also recommended. The following morning, it is advisable to perform a cleansing enema to completely empty the bowels.
  • Immediately one hour before your appointment, you should drink two to three glasses of water and refrain from going to the toilet. A full bladder helps create the necessary pressure in the ureters and renal pelvis, improving visibility of the organs and avoiding the administration of a contrast agent.

It is important to note whether the examination is performed on an empty stomach or whether a light breakfast is permitted. If the ultrasound is scheduled for the morning, it is best to avoid eating in the morning, as food can impair visualization of the kidney structure due to its presence in the intestinal lumen.

However, if you experience discomfort, you can eat a small cracker or biscuit, as these small amounts do not reach the intestines quickly. If the examination is scheduled for the afternoon, a light breakfast, such as porridge, is permitted.

General information

How is a kidney ultrasound performed?

Before performing a kidney ultrasound, the specialist asks the patient to lie down on the examination table. The doctor then applies a special gel to the skin of the patient's abdomen and lower back. This gel helps the probe glide more easily and better transmit ultrasound waves.

The doctor places the probe on the skin and begins to slowly move it over the desired area. The patient feels virtually nothing, except for the gentle pressure of the device and the coolness of the gel. The doctor carefully watches the screen, assessing the shape, size, and structure of the kidneys. During the examination, the doctor may ask the patient to hold their breath or change their position to better examine the desired areas.

The procedure lasts approximately 15 minutes. Afterward, the patient immediately gets up and goes about their daily activities; no special recovery is required. The results are either delivered directly to the patient or sent to the attending physician.

Interpreting kidney ultrasound results

The report issued by the physician performing the ultrasound includes important kidney characteristics such as location, shape, size, and relationship to adjacent structures. The final interpretation of the results should be performed by a specialist with a broad range of expertise.

Here is a list of possible abnormalities that can be detected during the examination:

  • Drooping kidneys (a condition known as nephroptosis)
  • Enlarged organs (a condition called hydronephrosis)
  • Increased density of the kidney walls
  • Heterogeneous organ structure
  • Inflamed parenchymal tissue
  • Stones located in different parts of the urinary system
  • Benign and cancerous tumors
  • Cysts, purulent foci, or fluid accumulations
  • Congenital structural anomalies and other diseases

During a kidney ultrasound The condition of the adrenal glands can also be determined. This important pair of endocrine glands has its own diagnostic specifics. Their healthy tissue blends in with the surrounding abdominal tissue, making it difficult to accurately determine the boundaries of healthy adrenal glands.

The health of these organs is determined by the absence of changes on the ultrasound screen. The adrenal glands become visible only in the presence of pathologies such as calcium deposits, tumors, or inflammatory processes. The absence of data on the adrenal glands during ultrasound is considered a good sign.

Kidney ultrasound prices in Moscow

FAQ about kidney ultrasound

How to distinguish a kidney stone from another neoplasm on ultrasound?

A stone has clear boundaries and produces an acoustic shadow behind it. Other neoplasms appear different and may appear as uniform or non-uniform areas on the screen.

Why does the doctor ask you to breathe deeply during a kidney ultrasound?

This is necessary to bring the kidneys closer to the transducer and make them more accessible for detailed examination. This makes it easier to assess their condition and spot any abnormalities.

Do children need any special preparation for a kidney ultrasound?

Yes, preparation is recommended. It's recommended that children avoid soda, cabbage, legumes, and fresh baked goods a couple of days before the procedure. These foods cause bloating and interfere with the diagnostic process.
