The procedure is considered safe because the high-frequency sound waves do not harm the child's body. Unlike X-rays, the examination does not involve radiation exposure and can be repeated multiple times, for example, to monitor treatment progress or brain development. Furthermore, the procedure does not require the administration of contrast agents, eliminating the risk of allergic reactions and toxicity.

- Size and symmetry of the cerebral ventricles
- Condition of the meninges
- Thickness and homogeneity of the parenchyma
- Presence of calcifications, cysts, hemorrhages

The neurosonography report is issued immediately after the procedure. A pediatric neurologist interprets the results. If any abnormalities are detected, the doctor prescribes additional tests or treatment.
Variations of the norm and deviations
When assessing the results, the doctor is guided by anatomical and quantitative parameters:
- Lateral ventricles of the brain. Dilation of more than 10 mm indicates hydrocephalus or ventriculomegaly.
- Subarachnoid spaces. The norm in the frontal zone is ≤ 4 mm, in the parietal zone - ≤ 6 mm. Increased values are a sign of hypotension and cerebrospinal fluid flow disturbances.
- Blood vessels. Symmetrical vascular plexuses, without cysts or hyperechoic inclusions. Cysts up to 3-4 mm are considered normal. Larger or multiple lesions require observation.
- Parenchyma. Has a uniform echostructure. Foci of increased echogenicity indicate periventricular leukomalacia, foci of decreased echogenicity indicate cysts or necrosis.
- Fontanelles. Normally, the anterior fontanelle reaches 2.5-3 cm, and the interhemispheric fissure is symmetrical. A fontanelle larger than 3 cm or asymmetrical fissures indicate intracranial pressure or developmental abnormalities.
Cysts and necrotic foci negatively impact cognitive and motor development. Cerebellar or cerebral peduncle abnormalities are often associated with impaired coordination and muscle tone. Thrombosis and tumors of the choroid plexus are accompanied by impaired cerebral blood flow, which can lead to ischemic lesions, psychomotor delays, and seizures.

Preparing for the Study

Preparation involves following several recommendations:
- Before the examination, wipe the baby's scalp with a damp cloth.
- Dress your child in loose clothing that is easy to remove or unbutton. This will make it easier to access the anterior fontanelle and the occipital region.
