What is included in a bladder ultrasound?

Ultrasonography of the bladder is a specialized diagnostic tool that allows the physician to comprehensively analyze the anatomical structure of the organ and detect possible structural anomalies. This highly informative method allows for a detailed study of the shape, contours, and internal structure of the bladder, as well as an objective assessment of the functional state of adjacent tissues and organs.

Regular ultrasound examinations are recommended for the preventive diagnosis of urinary tract pathologies, the timely detection of disorders, as well as for effective monitoring of the therapeutic process and the adjustment of prescribed treatment.

What does a bladder ultrasound show?

Ultrasonography of the urinary tract can detect a wide range of pathological conditions, including:

  • Cysts, polyps, and papillary structures within organs
  • Inflammatory processes, including infectious lesions of the mucous membrane
  • Calculi of various origins, microliths, and salt crystals in the urinary reservoir cavity
  • Various types of tumor processes of benign or malignant origin
  • Pelvic muscle dystrophy leading to a change in the normal position of the organ (more often observed in women)
  • Neurogenic dysfunction of the bladder due to a disorder of nervous regulation
  • Anomalies of embryonic development of the pelvic organs
  • Bulges or protrusions of the organ walls, predominantly occurring in men
  • Congestion secretory fluid, often associated with pathological changes in the prostate gland.

During the procedure, the doctor conducts a detailed study of the organ's shape and topographic location, the thickness of the muscle layer, the vascular network, and nerve fibers in the area being examined, which ensures an accurate diagnosis of possible abnormalities.

Ultrasound is actively used to monitor the effectiveness of previously initiated therapy and assess the dynamics of changes in the patient's condition during treatment.

General information

Indications for Bladder Ultrasound

Specialists strongly emphasize the need for regular urinary tract ultrasound examinations at least every two to three years to promptly detect even the slightest deviations from physiological norms and prevent the development of serious illnesses. Constant ultrasound monitoring helps prevent undesirable consequences of disease progression, prevents the transition of the acute phase of the disease to the chronic stage, and significantly reduces the likelihood of a surgical solution to the problem.

Women are advised to undergo an urgent, unscheduled ultrasound examination of the bladder if alarming symptoms such as:

  • Episodic urinary retention or frequent urination
  • Detection of blood cells in the urine
  • Signs of kidney disorders and problems with the urinary organs (pain in the lumbar region, the appearance of specific morning swelling of the face, severe fatigue)
  • Suspected functional disorders of the ovaries (acute pain in the lower abdomen, irregular menstrual cycles, spontaneous Bleeding)
  • Traumatic effects on the bladder
  • Significant discrepancies between normal urine and blood laboratory test values
  • Detected stones in the lumen of the urinary reservoir

Men are advised to seek immediate examination if they experience the following symptoms:

  • Discomfort when urinating, a feeling of insufficient evacuation of bladder contents, which indicates the likely development of prostate inflammation
  • Presence of red blood cells in the urine
  • Difficulty passing urine, pain in the back and groin
  • Traumatization of the bladder cavity itself due to the presence of stones in the organ

Ultrasound imaging of the urinary system is completely safe and does not pose any radiation threat to body tissues.

Indications for Bladder Ultrasound

Contraindications to Bladder Ultrasound

There are no absolute restrictions for performing bladder ultrasound screening. The only exceptions are circumstances in which the use of a contact probe is impossible due to certain conditions: extensive skin damage, recently applied surgical sutures, or open wound surfaces. Performing the examination is technically difficult if a medical drainage device, such as a catheter, is located in the area being examined.

Preparing for a Bladder Ultrasound

Optimal information yield from a bladder ultrasound is achieved only when the bladder is sufficiently filled with fluid. To ensure the maximum effectiveness of the diagnostic procedure, the patient should prepare the body in advance as follows: approximately one and a half to two hours before the session, drink about a liter of water and refrain from urinating until the completion of the examination.

This preliminary measure is due to the physical properties of sound propagation: acoustic signals do not penetrate well through air spaces. Therefore, it is extremely important to minimize gas formation in the intestines by following a special therapeutic diet the day before the procedure.

It is recommended to avoid foods that provoke excessive gas formation: freshly picked vegetables and fruits, baked goods, alcohol, carbonated drinks, dairy products, canned goods, beans, peas, and foods high in carbohydrates. The last meal of the night before should be completed three to four hours before bedtime, and a light, low-calorie breakfast is allowed in the morning.

Preparing for a Bladder Ultrasound

How is a bladder ultrasound performed and how long does it take?

Ultrasound examination of the bladder is performed transabdominally, meaning a special transducer is moved directly along the anterior abdominal wall. The physician directs a signal into the body, receives a return image, and simultaneously records the displayed data on the equipment monitor.

After completing the first part of the procedure, the physician asks the patient to empty the bladder, after which the examination resumes for image comparison and the specialist's final report. A bladder ultrasound examination lasts from five to twenty minutes.

Answers to frequently asked questions

Do I need to prepare psychologically for the procedure?

No, no special preparation is required. The procedure is quick and simple; the main thing is to arrive calmly and relax.

What will an ultrasound show if I have no complaints at all?

Even if nothing bothers me, an ultrasound is a useful preventative measure. It shows the size, shape, wall thickness, position, and structure of the bladder. Sometimes small stones, tumors, or infections are found before symptoms appear.

Why is an ultrasound performed with a full bladder?

This is necessary to better visualize the internal organs. A full bladder lifts the intestines, creating more space for viewing and improving the quality of the images.
