Intestinal Ultrasound

To accurately diagnose and prescribe appropriate treatment, it's not necessary to undergo unpleasant and harmful diagnostic procedures, as ultrasound imaging exists. This technique can successfully examine most parts of the body, including, for example, such a hollow organ as the intestine.

Indications for intestinal ultrasound

A colon ultrasound is recommended if certain symptoms and conditions occur, including:

  • Recurrent sharp or chronic pain in the lower abdomen
  • A constant feeling of fullness in the stomach, accompanied by flatulence and discomfort in the peritoneum
  • Bowler disturbances, expressed by alternating constipation and diarrhea, difficulty with defecation
  • Increased gas formation, frequent manifestations of acid reflux and air back up
  • An unpleasant bitter taste or putrid odor on the breath, indicating problems with the gastrointestinal tract
  • Suspected development of an inflammatory process, tumors, or congenital defects of the organ
  • Damage to the anterior abdominal wall due to trauma, requiring analysis of possible internal consequences
  • Regular monitoring of the health of patients with diagnoses such as Crohn's disease, colon ulcers, or diverticula
  • Postoperative monitoring of the patient's rehabilitation progress and prevention of complications

Doctors also actively use ultrasound to check the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory therapy and to track changes in the disease's dynamics after completion of drug treatment. The information obtained allows for timely adjustments to treatment strategies or the prescription of additional diagnostic procedures.

Indications for intestinal ultrasound

Contraindications

Contraindications

Ultrasound imaging of the intestines is completely harmless, as it does not involve radiation exposure. The patient experiences no discomfort or pain, so the procedure can be performed even in severe pain.

This absolute safety and painlessness make the examination suitable for a wide range of individuals, including young children, expectant mothers, and seniors over seventy. However, there are situations in which the procedure is not advisable. These include:

  • Critical deterioration in general well-being
  • Attacks of severe psychosis caused by alcohol or drug use
  • Exacerbations of mental disorders
  • Inability to assume a body position that ensures scanning accuracy

Bowel examination is also postponed in the acute phase of a chronic disease (for example, an exacerbation of Crohn's disease, necrotizing enterocolitis, thrombophlebitis of the hemorrhoidal veins) and the active phase of an infectious pathology.

General information

Preparing for a Colon Ultrasound

Preparatory measures before a colon ultrasound examination include a number of important recommendations:

  • Three days before the scheduled procedure, avoid foods and drinks that promote excess gas in the intestines: black bread, fresh white bread, beans, cabbage of all kinds, apples, and dairy products.
  • For one to two days before the procedure, it is helpful to consume sorbents such as activated charcoal, Enterosgel paste, or Smecta.
  • The examination is performed on an empty stomach. If it is scheduled for the evening, a light morning meal is permitted, including a small serving of cookies and unsweetened tea. It is then important to fast for another 8-10 hours for adults and four hours for young children.
  • To properly examine the intestines of someone prone to constipation, the patient will need to use an enema beforehand.

It is also important to know that an ultrasound examination of the intestines should not be performed if an irrigoscopy or colonoscopy was performed the day before.

Preparing for a Colon Ultrasound

How is a colon ultrasound performed?

The ultrasound itself takes a maximum of half an hour, and the diagnostic physician takes about another quarter of an hour to process the results. The procedure begins with visualization of the intestine. During this stage, the patient lies horizontally on the examination table. The specialist carefully distributes a contact gel, which improves the device's adhesion to the skin and facilitates the penetration of sound pulses. By gradually examining each section of the organ, the doctor creates a complete clinical picture.

Then comes the stage of filling the intestine with two to three liters of a special fluid. This measure is necessary to detect pathologies that are invisible in an empty intestine. After this first stage, the now-empty intestine is examined again.

If the area of interest is located in the large intestine, fluid is introduced through the anus using a special thin tubular instrument for a complete examination. To examine the rectum in detail, specialists use a special technique: the small intestine is artificially displaced from its natural location by applying moderate compression with a full bladder.

Intestinal Ultrasound Results

The final ultrasound report reflects the following information:

  • The exact size, shape, and location of the intestine along with adjacent organs
  • The thickness of the intestinal lining and the nature of the tissue structure
  • The presence of any abnormalities, including possible tumor cell formations, cystic lesions, signs of inflammation, or specific wall protrusions (diverticula)
  • The condition of adjacent soft tissues and lymph nodes
  • The patency of the intestinal lumen and the presence of potential anatomical abnormalities

The obtained data is interpreted by an experienced healthcare professional, taking into account the individual characteristics of each patient. If suspicious signs are detected, the patient may require further in-depth examination, such as an endoscopic examination of the intestine or magnetic resonance imaging, which will allow for a more accurate determination of the cause of the detected problems.

Advantages of Colon Ultrasound

The main advantages of colon ultrasound include the following:

  • Exceptional detail and high accuracy of the information obtained
  • Minimal procedure time, immediate availability of final data
  • Completely safe – it is not associated with any pain or health risks
  • Ability to detect the smallest changes in the mucous membrane, damage to the vascular system, hemorrhages, the appearance of benign and cancerous tumors, the presence of foreign objects, and abnormalities in the size and location of internal organs

Colon ultrasound helps identify diseases and neoplasms at an early stage, ensuring timely treatment.

Advantages of Colon Ultrasound

Intestinal Ultrasound Equipment

The primary equipment for an intestinal ultrasound is called an ultrasound machine. This device works like this: special transducers send sound waves into the body, then capture the reflected signals and convert them into an image on the screen.

The machine is equipped with different transducers, each designed for a specific sound penetration depth. For example, one transducer is convenient for examining the large intestine, while another allows for examining the small intestine. Transducers can be convex, flat, or linear, depending on the doctor's needs.

In addition to the machine, a high-quality ultrasound requires a gel, which improves signal transmission and provides the doctor with a clear image on the monitor.

Colon Ultrasound Prices in Moscow

The cost of a colon ultrasound depends on several factors. First, the clinic's level plays a significant role: small private practices or public hospitals offer lower prices than prestigious medical centers. The more comfortable the conditions and the more modern the equipment, the more expensive the service, but the quality of the examination justifies the cost.

Second, the price depends on the specialist's qualifications. Another factor influencing pricing is the need for preparation and additional procedures. On average, a colon ultrasound in Moscow costs between 3,000 and 7,000 rubles. You can get a high-quality colon ultrasound using state-of-the-art equipment at the K+31 Clinic (Moscow). You can find out the cost by phone, during an in-person appointment, or from the price list on the clinic's website.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can be seen on a colon ultrasound?

An ultrasound shows the internal structure of the intestine and surrounding organs. Thickening of the walls, inflammation, hernias, fluid accumulations, and foreign objects can be detected. Doctors evaluate the intestinal patency and the overall condition of the surrounding tissues.

Can an ultrasound detect colon cancer?

Yes, an ultrasound can reveal suspicious lumps that may be cancer. Large tumors are particularly visible, but small lesions can be difficult to detect. Therefore, if there is a suspicion, doctors refer the patient for additional tests.

Which is better: a colonoscopy or a colon ultrasound?

It depends on the purpose. An ultrasound is faster and simpler, suitable for an initial examination and to rule out serious problems. It is painless and does not require anesthesia. A colonoscopy, however, allows for a detailed examination of the entire surface of the colon from the inside, allows for tissue sampling, and allows for the removal of small polyps during the procedure. However, a colonoscopy is more difficult to tolerate and requires preliminary preparation. It is best to choose the method with your doctor, taking into account your specific symptoms and situation.

I am being observed by Dr. Maso M.L. The doctor is excellent, professional, and empathetic. He is always involved, takes his time and answers all questions in great detail. I also want to mention the work of the mammology department manager, Ksenia. It is pleasant to communicate with Ksenia, she is always friendly to the patient, you can contact her for any reason and know that Ksenia will make every effort to organize everything at the highest level. The only negative aspect relates to the reception on the ground floor. Unfortunately, the long wait and unhurried administrators spoil the impression of the clinic.
