Purpose of the study

Abdominal ultrasound is a diagnostic method that allows for a detailed examination of internal organs without pain or risk to health.

The procedure is aimed at identifying abnormalities in the function of organs located in the abdominal and retroperitoneal regions. Using modern equipment, the doctor can examine all problem areas under high magnification. This allows for easy recognition of even asymptomatic stages of the disease, when the pathological process can be halted or slowed with conservative treatments.

Ultrasound is used both for an initial examination for complaints of pain or discomfort and for monitoring the progress of already diagnosed diseases. The examination is also indicated before surgical interventions, for treatment planning, and to monitor the effectiveness of therapy.

Thanks to the high-resolution, modern equipment at the K+31 Clinic, the doctor receives a clear image of organs, vessels, and ducts in real time.

Purpose of the study

Indications for ultrasound

Indications for ultrasound

The most common reason for an ultrasound is unexplained abdominal pain, particularly in the right upper quadrant or epigastrium, a feeling of fullness even after a light meal, and episodes of heartburn or belching. Other important signs requiring a visual assessment of internal organs include yellowing of the skin and sclera, bloating, excessive gas, unstable stools ranging from constipation to diarrhea, a metallic or bitter taste in the mouth, and persistent bad breath.

The examination is prescribed for abdominal trauma to rule out hidden injuries, as well as for changes in blood tests that may indicate dysfunction of internal organs. A doctor may recommend an ultrasound as part of a comprehensive diagnosis if tumors or cysts are suspected.

This test is part of the standard monitoring plan for patients with chronic gastrointestinal and liver diseases. It is also advisable to undergo diagnostic testing for preventative purposes in cases of regular alcohol consumption, the presence of hereditary risk factors, and before scheduled surgeries.

Contraindications and restrictions

Contraindications and restrictions

The technique is safe for all patient groups, including pregnant women, newborns, and the elderly. Relative limitations apply only to situations where the examination may be difficult, such as extensive wounds, burns, or fresh abdominal sutures, as well as after recent endoscopic procedures (gastroscopy, colonoscopy).

Preparing for the examination

To ensure the most informative abdominal ultrasound possible, careful preparation is essential. The key is to minimize intestinal gas formation and eliminate factors that could distort the image.

Preparation for Adults

During the preparation phase, eliminate foods that promote gas production from your diet. Have your last meal no later than 6 hours before the procedure. Drinking water is permitted during this time, but stop drinking any liquids 1–1.5 hours before the ultrasound.

The night before or the day before the examination, if necessary, you can take mild carminatives. These medications help reduce the amount of gas that interferes with the ultrasound and impairs visualization.

Preparation for Children

Children over 2 years of age are examined strictly on an empty stomach, following the same guidelines as adults. At least 6 hours must pass between their last meal and the clinic visit. During this time, the stomach and intestines empty of contents and gases, which is important for clear imaging.

A small amount of water may be drunk no later than 1.5 hours before the procedure. This restriction prevents image distortion due to a full stomach or active peristalsis.

If the child is taking any medications, inform the doctor in advance.

Preparation for Children Under 2 Years

For children under 2 years of age, preparation for an abdominal ultrasound is based on the digestive characteristics of early childhood. The examination is scheduled 3 hours after the last feeding, whether breast or formula. All liquid intake should be stopped at least 1–1.5 hours before the procedure, as with older children and adults.

How is an abdominal ultrasound performed?

The procedure lasts 15 to 25 minutes. The patient lies on an examination table, most often in a supine position. The healthcare professional applies a clear ultrasound gel to the abdomen, which eliminates air gaps between the skin and the transducer.

Then, the doctor slowly and carefully moves the transducer over the surface of the abdominal wall, examining the organs from different angles and projections. Sometimes, for better visualization, the specialist may ask the patient to inhale deeply, exhale, or turn on their side to assess the shape, mobility, and relationships of the organs.

The resulting image is displayed on the monitor in real time, allowing the doctor to immediately analyze the contours, structure, vessels, and tissue layers.

General information

What does an ultrasound show?

The examination can detect even the slightest signs of incipient diseases or disorders. Ultrasound helps carefully assess tissue condition, its density and homogeneity, blood supply, and the extent of involvement of adjacent areas. Due to its high information content, ultrasound is used not only for initial diagnosis but also to assess the dynamics of changes after treatment or surgery.

What does an ultrasound show?

Effective Diagnosis of Disorders

The examination allows us to detect even the slightest signs of incipient diseases or disorders. Ultrasound helps us carefully assess the condition of tissues, their density and homogeneity, blood flow, and the degree of involvement of adjacent areas. Due to its high information content, ultrasound is used not only for initial diagnosis but also to assess the dynamics of changes after treatment or surgery.

Effective Diagnosis of Disorders

Abdominal ultrasound helps diagnose the following pathologies:

  • Hepatitis: an inflammatory disease of the liver that occurs against the background of a viral infection, exposure to toxic substances, alcohol abuse, or metabolic disorders in the body. Ultrasound helps to recognize hepatitis by changes in the density and structure of the organ's tissue.
  • Cirrhosis: a progressive chronic disease in which healthy liver cells are gradually replaced by scar tissue. On ultrasound, cirrhosis is characterized by changes in the shape and structure of the liver, enlargement or reduction of its lobes, and signs of portal hypertension.
  • Cholecystitis: an inflammatory process in the wall of the gallbladder, accompanied by pain in the right upper quadrant, nausea, an unpleasant taste in the mouth, and elevated body temperature.
  • Gallstone disease: the formation of hard deposits (calculi) in the gallbladder or its ducts.
  • Pancreatitis: inflammation of the pancreas, where enzymes begin to destroy the organ itself instead of activating in the intestine. It occurs against the background of impaired outflow of digestive enzymes.
  • Pancreonecrosis: a severe form of pancreatitis in which pancreatic tissues begin to die due to aggressive action of enzymes and inflammation.
  • Benign and malignant tumors: ultrasound allows for the detection of formations of various natures.
  • Cysts: cavity formations filled with fluid. They most often occur asymptomatically.
  • Fibrosis: thickening of tissues due to the proliferation of connective tissue against the background of chronic inflammation or damage to the organ.
  • Splenomegaly: enlargement of the spleen, occurring in infections, blood diseases, immune system disorders, or liver damage. Ultrasound helps measure the organ, identify changes in its structure, and determine possible causes of enlargement.
  • Biliary stasis: impaired outflow of gallbladder contents, leading to discomfort and heaviness in the right upper quadrant. If measures are not taken promptly, an inflammatory process may begin.
  • Duct dyskinesia: a disorder of the motor function of the excretory pathways of organs, leading to difficulty in secret outflow. It manifests as pain, discomfort, heaviness in the right upper quadrant, and sometimes nausea or bitterness in the mouth.
  • Traumatic organ injuries after bruises, falls, or car accidents, which are dangerous due to functional impairments and internal bleeding. Ultrasound helps identify ruptures, hematomas, fluid accumulations, and allows for quick determination of treatment tactics.

Interpretation of Results

After completing the examination, the ultrasound specialist prepares a detailed report detailing the size and contours of the organs, their internal structure, including any areas of hardening, formation, or changes in tissue density. The diagnostician also records the condition of the vascular and ductal systems, the amount of free fluid in the abdominal cavity, and, if necessary, blood flow parameters reflecting the functional state of the internal organs.

The ultrasound report should be shown to the attending physician, who will interpret the results in conjunction with the clinical symptoms and laboratory tests. If necessary, additional examinations may be prescribed, such as MRI, CT, blood biochemistry, or biopsy.

Advantages of Ultrasound Diagnostics

Ultrasound diagnostics offers the following advantages:

  • Safe: the method does not involve radiation, suitable for all patients of any age. Can be performed repeatedly.
  • Painless: does not cause discomfort and does not require a long recovery period.
  • Highly informative: expert-class equipment can detect the slightest abnormalities in the early, asymptomatic stages. A report is available in 10-20 minutes.
  • Affordable price.
