Indications for hospice admission

Registration to the institution is recommended for patients for whom active treatment is no longer effective, and the main goal is to alleviate the condition and maintain quality of life. Main indications:

  • Terminal-stage oncological diseases
  • Severe progressive diseases (chronic heart, kidney or liver failure, COPD)
  • Terminal-stage neurological pathologies (Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis)

The decision to refer to a hospice is made by the attending physician together with the patient or his legal representative, based on medical indications and individual needs.

The difference between palliative care and hospice care

These are parts of the same system of medical and psychological support, but with different tasks and formats.

Palliative care is provided to patients with serious illnesses at different stages - not only at the end of life. It includes pain control, symptom relief, psychological and social support. It is provided in hospitals, at home or in outpatient settings.

Hospice care is palliative, it is provided in a specialized institution when the disease is in the terminal stage, and treatment is no longer effective. The main emphasis is on comfort, care, respectful attitude and help in the most difficult days.

Palliative care can be received even by those who continue to receive treatment. In a hospice, a person is surrounded by attention when treatment is completed, and it is important to provide him with peace, safety and decent conditions for the remaining period of life.

Documents required for admission to a hospice
Documents required for admission to a hospice

To register a patient at a medical center, you need to prepare:

  • An extract from the medical history - with a detailed description of the diagnosis, stages of treatment and the current condition of the patient
  • A conclusion from an oncologist or attending physician - that active treatment is ineffective or impossible
  • A referral for palliative care - usually issued at the clinic at the place of residence
  • The patient's passport and compulsory medical insurance policy - if free accommodation is provided
  • Consent of the patient or his legal representative to receive palliative care and conditions of stay
  • A power of attorney or documents confirming guardianship (if necessary)

It is recommended to contact the hospice in advance to clarify the exact list of documents and the procedure for submitting them.

Living conditions in the hospice

The institution has created the most comfortable and safe conditions that meet the needs of seriously ill people.

Organization of conditions for patients

Patients are placed in individual or shared wards equipped with medical beds, staff call systems and sanitary facilities.

The interior is comfortable and as close to home as possible. Personal belongings are allowed. There are visiting areas and the possibility of relatives staying nearby (if necessary).

Medical support

Doctors, nurses, psychologists and social workers provide round-the-clock care. The patient is prescribed pain relief, symptoms are monitored and attempts are made to prevent possible complications, such as bedsores. Patients and families receive psychological and social support, and, if necessary, spiritual support.

The procedure for registering a patient in a hospice

The registration procedure usually takes from one to several days, depending on the urgency and readiness of the documents.

There are several steps to admission to a medical institution:

  • Initial consultation Relatives or legal representative of the patient contact the palliative care hospice to obtain information about availability of places, living conditions and necessary documents
  • Collection and submission of documents Include medical reports, referral for palliative care, passport and patient policy, written consent for hospitalization
  • Medical assessment of the condition After submitting the documents, hospice doctors study the medical history, and may additionally conduct an examination of the patient to assess his condition and select the optimal care
  • Conclusion of a contract In the case of a paid stay, a contract is drawn up, which specifies the conditions, list of services, cost and rights of the parties
  • Hospitalization After approval and completion of all formalities, the patient is settled in a ward. From the first hours of stay, round-the-clock care and medical supervision begin

I would like to express my gratitude to my attending physician - the wonderful otorhinolaryngologist Anastasia Vladimirovna Varvyanskaya for his professionalism, attentiveness and kindness! And also to all employees of the K+31 West clinic who took part in the operation and the pre/postoperative period, these are: head of the ENT department Zalina Muratovna Tetsoeva, anesthesiologist Kristina Inalovna Siukaeva, head of the anesthesiology and resuscitation department Zarina Igorevna Sypkova, all nurses, secondary and to the junior medical staff, Alexander, who drove me to the operating room and back, hospitalization managers, administrators and everyone, everyone, everyone! I had surgery on March 14, 2024 for a deviated nasal septum and hypertrophied nasal turbinates (septoplasty + osteoconchotomy). I have been suffering from difficulty breathing through my nose for a long time. I got an appointment with Dr. A.V. Varvyanskaya. I immediately realized that I was ready for surgery with this specialist. The surgery and recovery went flawlessly. Finally, after many years of torment, my nose could breathe freely. Thank you!
