Who is a mammologist?

Mammology is a branch of medicine responsible for the prevention and treatment of breast pathologies. A physician who works in this field is called a mammologist. They help identify and treat breast diseases and prevent potential problems.

Mammologists examine patients and prescribe necessary tests and examinations, such as ultrasound or mammography. A physician specializing in mammology can also recommend preventative measures such as a balanced diet, a healthy lifestyle, and timely breast self-examination.

If serious illnesses, such as cancer, are suspected, a mammologist will refer the patient to other specialists, such as an oncologist or surgeon.

When to see a mammologist

When to see a mammologist

Visiting a mammologist is important both for complaints and as a preventative measure, as the mammary gland is an extremely sensitive organ that requires special attention. Here are the main situations when a visit to the doctor is necessary:

  • Pain, discomfort, or unusual sensations in the breast
  • Lumps or lumps in the breast are discovered
  • Changes in the size or shape of the breast or nipple
  • Nipple discharge, especially bloody discharge, is observed
  • Breast skin has changed color or feels different to the touch
  • Inflammation, redness, or swelling are a concern
  • Unpleasant symptoms have developed after a breast injury
  • A woman is planning a pregnancy or has recently given birth
  • There is a hereditary predisposition to breast diseases

Even if nothing is bothering her, doctors recommend visiting a mammologist once a year. Regular checkups help identify potential problems early and avoid serious consequences.

Diagnostic methods in mammology

Diagnostic methods in mammology

To accurately determine the condition of the mammary glands and detect possible diseases, doctors use various diagnostic methods. The simplest of these is palpation, or feeling the mammary gland, which is the beginning of the examination.

Diagnostic methods include:

  • Ultrasound is a test performed using a special device that sends sound waves into the tissue. These waves are reflected, creating an image of the internal structures of the breast, which is displayed on a monitor. Ultrasound is comfortable, harmless, and requires no special preparation before the procedure. This method allows you to see various formations, check the tissue structure, and detect even small changes.
  • Mammography is an X-ray of the breast that produces detailed images using minimal radiation doses. The procedure lasts only a couple of minutes, during which each breast is placed between plates of the device and gently compressed to obtain a clear image. This method makes it possible to detect tiny calcium deposits, inflammation, and tumors that are invisible during a routine examination.
  • Radiothermometry is a method of measuring the temperature inside breast tissue using a special device. An elevated temperature may indicate inflammation or tumors.
  • Biopsy: The doctor removes a small piece of breast tissue for further examination under a microscope. This method allows for an accurate diagnosis, especially if a tumor is suspected.
  • Blood tests: For diagnosis, blood is often tested for special substances called tumor markers. These can show signs of tumors. Blood tests can also check hormone levels, as some diseases are associated with hormonal changes.
  • Nipple discharge testing: If a woman notices discharge from her breast, it is important to have it tested. Doctors determine the composition of the fluid to rule out pathology.

These methods help doctors understand what's happening to the breast and choose the appropriate treatment.

Treatment Methods for Breast Diseases

Breast diseases are treated in two main ways: conservatively and surgically. Conservative therapy includes medications and procedures that help eliminate the condition without surgery. Here are the most common treatment options:

  • Medication: The patient is prescribed tablets, ointments, or injections that can relieve inflammation, reduce pain, and restore normal breast function. For example, anti-inflammatory medications help relieve pain and swelling, while specialized treatments normalize hormonal balance.
  • Physiotherapy: The use of heat, magnetic fields, or specialized devices accelerates healing and improves blood circulation. These procedures provide relief to the patient without invasive intervention.
  • Lifestyle changes – sometimes changing your diet, exercising, or giving up bad habits is enough to alleviate the symptoms of breast conditions.

Conservative treatment is suitable for many women, especially if the pathology is detected at an early stage and is mild.

Surgery is chosen when the disease is very advanced or drug therapy is ineffective.

Main types of breast surgery:

  • Cyst removal – small fluid-filled cavities are removed quickly and virtually painlessly. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, with a quick recovery.
  • Node extirpation – when large nodes or benign tumors are detected, the doctor removes them entirely along with the surrounding tissue. This surgery prevents the recurrence of tumors.
  • Oncological surgeries – in severe cases, part or all of the breast must be removed. Modern technologies allow for careful surgery, preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

The choice of treatment is determined by a doctor, taking into account the patient's age, overall health, and the stage of the disease. The earlier a diagnosis is made by a specialist, the greater the chance of minimal intervention and returning to a full life.

General information

Mammologist services

A mammologist appointment begins with a simple conversation, where the doctor asks the woman about her health, complaints, and past illnesses. The doctor then carefully examines the breasts, palpating each area to detect any suspicious changes.

Next, the mammologist reviews the results of any tests and examinations the woman has brought with her, whether it be an ultrasound, MRI, or mammogram. Based on all the data obtained, the doctor formulates an accurate diagnosis.

If additional examinations are needed, the doctor immediately creates a detailed plan for further action. After a diagnosis, the specialist provides advice on treatment and lifestyle issues. The specialist may prescribe medications and suggest physical therapy.

Sometimes a consultation with another specialist is necessary, for example, an oncologist, endocrinologist, or surgeon. In such cases, the mammologist refers the patient to the appropriate specialist.

According to the doctor's instructions, a mammologist performs special procedures directly during the appointment: measuring breast tissue temperature with special devices (radiothermometry), taking cell samples with a thin needle (fine-needle biopsy), or performing other procedures under ultrasound guidance.

A visit to this doctor provides a comprehensive approach to breast care, ensuring timely diagnosis and effective treatment of any problems that arise.
