A modern colonoscope is equipped with a miniature video camera that records everything that happens in the intestine. Colonoscopy of the intestine is currently one of the most complete and reliable methods for identifying pathologies in the large intestine. Based on symptomatic diagnosis and colonoscopy results, the doctor can give a comprehensive answer to the question about the condition of this part of the gastrointestinal tract, accurately localize the problem (if any) and prescribe treatment (or prevention methods).
The classic colonoscopy procedure is performed using a special device - a colonoscope, which is a hollow flexible tube with a diameter of up to 10 mm. Due to its flexibility and sufficient length, the colonoscope can freely penetrate the large intestine and pass through its natural bends.
A modern colonoscope is equipped with a miniature video camera that records everything that happens in the intestine. The video signal from the camera is transmitted to the monitor, observing which the endoscopist controls the movement of the device, studying the condition of the intestinal walls. The colonoscope tube contains additional narrow channels through which the diagnostician can insert special devices for intestinal tissue biopsy or for viewing neoplasms using ultrasound.
During a colonoscopy, the doctor can also: remove polyps, determine the source of bleeding, remove foreign bodies and expand narrowed areas, identify benign neoplasms, cancer and other pathologies, and observe changes occurring in the intestines.
Video capsule colonoscopy is a modern method of examining the intestines.
Just like with capsule endoscopy, the patient swallows the capsule with water. The device takes 2 pictures per second for several hours (from the oral cavity to the rectum), only in the case of video capsule colonoscopy, the priority area for thorough examination from the inside is the large intestine.
