Preparation for research

Breast examination questionnaire

Mammography traditionally refers to a non-invasive method of examining the mammary glands using X-rays (X-rays). How to prepare for this procedure, and what are the features of the study?

Preparing for mammography

Mammography is indicated as part of a screening examination of women over 40 years old, regardless of the presence or absence of complaints. Also, mammography is a method of primary diagnosis in identifying formations in the mammary gland as part of a medical examination.

What should be done before coming to the clinic?

  • Choose the optimal period: although mammography can be performed throughout the entire menstrual cycle, the optimal time is considered to be a week after the end of menstruation, when the breast is the least painful and sensitive.
  • Exclude the use of creams, antiperspirants, lotions in the area of the mammary glands and armpits: they may contain particles that will distort the image.
  • Find the results of previous mammographic studies, if they were carried out: with their help, the radiation diagnostician will be able to assess the dynamics.

What should be done immediately before the study?

  • Tell the diagnostician about pain and lumps, if any.
  • Remove neck jewelry.

The procedure does not require any restrictions in the normal course of the day and takes only a few minutes.

Features of mammography

Pictures are taken in two projections (direct and oblique) for both mammary glands. If necessary, the doctor can take a photograph in an additional projection - to clarify the nature of the changes identified in standard images.

In order to obtain an image, the mammary glands are located on the detector (where the image is formed) and compressed (literally for a few seconds) with a pressure plate. At this time, a picture is taken. Then the procedure is repeated in the next projection.

X-ray of the mammary glands assumes minimal radiation, therefore it is absolutely safe for the body.

Preparing for a breast biopsy

Breast biopsy is a diagnostic method that allows you to establish the nature of the formation in the breast, as well as determine the further tactics of examination and treatment. A biopsy is a tissue sample taken using minimally invasive methods.

How to prepare for a biopsy and what are the features of this procedure?

If, as a result of examination of the mammary gland, a nodular formation is found, then, in the absence of contraindications, a biopsy is prescribed.

What to remember if a biopsy is recommended for you?

  • Alcohol should be completely avoided 48 hours before the biopsy procedure.
  • 40 minutes before the procedure, you must (eat).
  • It is necessary to notify the doctor conducting this manipulation about the presence of an allergy to medications (if any), as well as about the medications that the patient is taking.

Features of breast biopsy

The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia, which eliminates pain during the procedure.

The procedure itself depends on the method used, according to which they distinguish:

  • Fine-needle aspiration biopsy - the procedure involves the collection of cells, which are subsequently sent for cytological examination; with this variant of biopsy, it is impossible to assess the degree of malignancy of the tumor, to assess the histological subtype of the tumor, as well as to further immunohistochemical study.
  • Thick-needle trephine biopsy - performed using a special instrument; a collection of columns of breast tissue is performed with subsequent histological examination; this biopsy option is performed for all newly diagnosed nodular breast neoplasms.
  • Vacuum aspiration biopsy - performed mainly under the control of MRI and X-ray; with this biopsy option, tissue columns are also taken, followed by histological examination.

The duration of the procedure depends on the type of biopsy and can take from 10 minutes to an hour.

The results of the diagnostic procedure will be ready in a few days. After a breast biopsy, you should temporarily give up physical activity, as well as visit the bath.
