Diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses

According to statistics, people complain to the doctor about nasal diseases only when the disease is already in an advanced stage. At first, attempts are made to self-medicate, which often causes complications and difficulties with subsequent treatment. The nose is a complex and delicate system, and should be treated as such.

The nasal mucosa is constantly in contact with the external environment, warming and purifying the air. Viruses, “flying” allergens, industrial pollution - all this reduces the local immunity of the nasal cavity, provoking the occurrence of inflammation, which, if treated incorrectly, develops into more serious diseases.

When should you start worrying?

The most common cause is infection, but deterioration in ventilation and drainage of the sinuses caused by injuries, congenital pathologies and neoplasms can also affect it. In any case, the appearance of a number of characteristic symptoms in a person indicates the need to consult a specialist:

  • Snoring
  • Migraines
  • Sneezing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Deterioration of smell
  • Nasal discharge
  • Pain in the forehead or cheeks
  • Pain in the head when bending over
  • Nosebleeds

Common types of diseases

Deformations

The often occurring curvature of the nasal septum does not cause any particular inconvenience, but there are also more serious deviations: narrowing of the nasal passages, congenital deformation of the nose, fistulas. In these cases, the help of an ENT surgeon is necessary. Injuries are not uncommon in adolescence and among fans of contact martial arts. Bone fractures and severe bruises to the nose can cause swelling or hematoma.

Rhinitis

More commonly known as a runny nose, it occurs as a result of the body's reaction to hypothermia or infection. As a rule, it does not require special treatment; it is enough to provide a gentle regime and warm drinks - the runny nose will disappear in a week. It’s another matter if the nose runs too often or the disease does not go away within seven days. Chronic rhinitis is a bad sign, so don’t hesitate to go to the clinic to identify and eliminate its causes. The chronic form causes swelling of the mucous membrane, making it difficult to breathe and smell. Treatment is usually carried out with vasoconstrictor drops, rinsing the nasal passages, and inhalations are prescribed.

Sinusitis

General name for inflammation of the paranasal sinuses. Severe headache, pressure on the eyes and high temperature are sure signs of sinusitis. Some may be familiar with the term “sinusitis”. Here we need to clarify: sinusitis is one of the variations of sinusitis. This group also includes: frontal sinusitis, sphenoiditis and complex inflammations. Sinusitis can occur due to infection, but it can also be caused by injury, advanced caries, or dirty water getting into the nose. Sinusitis is a dangerous disease that requires medical intervention: discharge from the inflamed sinuses can get into neighboring tissues and even penetrate the brain, which is fraught with irreversible consequences. The most effective treatment is puncture (puncture and rinsing) of the inflamed sinus; in mild forms, you can get by with a course of antibiotics prescribed by a doctor.
