Paracentesis

Paracentesis is a medical procedure where the doctor uses a syringe removes pathological contents most often from the abdominal and ear cavities. This reduces pain and discomfort and also helps in diagnosis. At the K+31 clinic, doctors have sufficient experience and knowledge and the skill to carry out this procedure if necessary.

When is eardrum paracentesis performed?

Fluid in the inner ear forms during diseases and injuries. The puncture is done both for relief and for diagnosis. Indications include:

  • Acute purulent otitis. With inflammation of the middle ear, pus accumulates behind the eardrum. It causes pain. If the medications do not help or act more slowly than necessary, the doctor makes a puncture and removes the contents.
  • Barotrauma of the ear. When the pressure is different inside and outside the body, the membrane begins to retract inward and is injured. Blood and inflammatory fluid accumulate.
  • Inflammation of the auditory tube (eustachitis). Connects the middle ear with the pharynx. With upper respiratory tract infections, mucus from the nasopharynx enters the cavity next to the eardrum. Inflammation begins and fluid accumulates.
  • Diagnostics. A puncture is performed to obtain a sample. In the laboratory, they look at the nature of the liquid and identify the type of pathogen. This information helps the doctor prescribe treatment.
  • X-ray diagnostics. To check the patency of the tubes, a contrast agent is injected through the puncture. Then they take a photo.

Only a doctor can decide whether a puncture is necessary. ENT doctors at the K+31 clinic listen to complaints at the appointment, examine the eardrum with an otoscope and, if necessary, carry out a procedure.

Recovery

After the puncture, the eardrum heals within 10 days. Scars do not form. As a rule, patients go home immediately after the procedure.

The recovery period after abdominal puncture includes:

  • Rest and limitation of physical activity
  • Proper nutrition
  • Taking medications for the underlying disease

It is important not to miss follow-up appointments, undergo examinations and monitor changes in the condition. If alarming symptoms occur, you should consult your doctor.
