Endocrinologist appointment

When to see an endocrinologist?

The endocrine system is one of the key regulators of the processes occurring in the body. Many will be surprised to learn that the endocrine system regulates not only weight and reproductive capacity, but also blood pressure, digestion, sleep, bone strength, mood, and more. The manifestations of endocrine diseases are bizarre and diverse.

Recently, more and more scientific studies have been devoted to functional changes in the work of the endocrine organs, that is, they occurred not as a result of an illness, but due to sleep disturbances, excessive stress, unbalanced nutrition, insufficient physical activity, and the consumption of endocrine disruptors. In a broad sense, any state of ill health, the presence of other chronic diseases entails disruptions in the work of the endocrine system, which further aggravates the state of affairs. Sometimes the situation looks like a snowball, when the root cause of the event pulls a whole train of endocrine disorders. For example, in a man with Gilbert's disease and biliary dyskinesia, fat-soluble vitamins and other nutrients are not fully absorbed, because of this, parathyroid hormone rises, which leads to premature osteoporosis, and testosterone is not produced enough, as a result of which it is difficult to gain muscle mass, he experiences weakness and drops mood.

Consulting a good endocrinologist is useful in many situations, but it is especially important to pay attention and come to the appointment on time if you have:

  • Marked weight loss or gain.
  • Mood swings, irritability.
  • Severe vegetative complaints: for example, sweating, palpitations, hot flashes, indigestion (both constipation and diarrhea).
  • Sleep disturbance: insomnia or drowsiness during the day.
  • Increased blood pressure before the age of 50 or severe arterial hypertension, the need to take 3-4 antihypertensive drugs.
  • Pain in joints and bones, aching pain in the spine, as well as if there were fractures due to minor injury (for example, falling into ice).
  • There is a violation of the menstrual cycle, erectile dysfunction, decreased sex drive (in both men and women), infertility, breast tenderness (in men - mammary glands).
  • There are sensations of numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, and frequent muscle cramps.

They can be a sign of not only endocrine pathology, therefore, complex diagnostics may be required to identify the true cause of the symptoms.

A healthy person does not need special methods for the prevention of endocrine diseases: you should take care of your health, regularly undergo medical examinations, exercise, monitor nutrition and weight, and pay attention to the appearance of symptoms.

There is no single universal list of examinations to assess the function of endocrine organs. At the first suspicious signs, it is better to consult a doctor, who, based on a general assessment of the state of health, the presence of symptoms, will form an examination plan individually for each.
