Epidemiology:

The incidence of disc herniation is 5 to 20 cases per 1,000 adults annually. The male to female ratio is 2:1
Cervical disc herniation occurs in 8% of cases and most often develops at the C5-C6 and C6-C7 level
Lumbar disc herniation occurs 15 times more often than cervical disc herniation
At the lumbar level, in 95% of cases, these are L4-L5 and L5-S1 disc herniations
Symptomatic lumbar disc herniation occurs in 1% to 3%
2% of the population requires surgery for intervertebral disc herniation

Clinical manifestations:

The clinical picture of a herniated disc is accompanied by neurological disorders caused by compression of nearby nerve structures (spinal cord, spinal root)
Common symptoms:
- Local (local) pain syndrome (lower back pain, neck pain)
- Pain in the arms and legs
- Numbness in the arms and legs
- Paresis - decreased muscle strength (decreased strength in the hands, weakness of the foot, "foot slapping")
- Pelvic organ dysfunction

Causes:

A number of factors lead to disc degeneration (the cause of herniation):

Endogenous (internal) factors - genetics, metabolic disorders
Exogenous (external, often mechanical factors) - lifting weights, torsional loads, driving a car, etc.

Diagnostics:

MRI of one or more parts of the spine
If it is impossible to perform MRI, CT or CT myelography may be performed

Treatment:

Conservative: drug therapy (NSAIDs, mimorelacants, anticonvulsants, hormones), physiotherapy, therapeutic physical education (physical therapy, kinesiotherapy)
Surgical: microsurgical or endoscopic removal of disc herniation
