A new approach to migraine treatment now at K+31

Migraine is a serious neurological disease that affects millions of patients in Russia. Its prevalence in our country reaches 20%. Women are most susceptible to it, they make up about two-thirds of patients.

A migraine can cause such severe pain that a person loses the ability to carry out normal activities, even getting out of bed becomes difficult. In this case, the attacks occur unpredictably and are often accompanied by nausea and distorted vision.

In about half of patients, migraines first develop during childhood or adolescence.

A migraine attack usually lasts from several hours to several days. Moreover, up to 90% of patients cannot work during this period. A seizure may be unrelated to anything, but may be associated with certain activities, foods, smells, or emotions. Some patients tend to experience severe headaches when they are under stress.

Previously, over-the-counter pain relievers were mainly used to relieve seizures. Their goal was to interrupt the headache that had already begun.

Fortunately, prophylactic treatments for migraines with proven effectiveness are now becoming available to patients. They are used to treat patients over 18 years old if migraine attacks occur at least 4 times a month.

In our clinic, treatment is available both with medication and with injections. Including a drug that blocks receptors sensitive to the substance CGRP (calcitonin gene related peptide). It has been found that during a migraine attack, its number increases dramatically. By depriving the receptors of sensitivity, the drug deactivates CGRP, thereby preventing the onset of seizures from the start and in the future.
