Neutrophils in a complete blood count (NEUT)

The most numerous representatives of "white" blood are neutrophilic corpuscles. They are a mandatory parameter of the leukocyte formula. A healthy person should have a stab (at the penultimate stage of maturation) and finally matured segmented form of neutrophil cells.

In case of pathology, even earlier precursors can enter the vascular bed: myelocytes and metamyelocytes (another name is young cells), which indicates a pronounced shift of the leukocyte formula to the left. Excessive content of mature shaped elements - displacement to the right.

The normal value of stab NEUT is 1-5%, segmented - 45-72%. An increase in the amount (neutrophilia) is noted when:

  • Infectious manifestations (fever, weakness, sweating, headaches, runny nose, cough, sore throat, skin rashes, diarrhea, urinary disorders);

  • Most infectious and inflammatory diseases of a bacterial nature;

  • Tumor progression;

  • Tissue damage (trauma, heart attack);

  • The appearance of purulent foci;

  • Pregnancy;

  • Intense physical activity;

  • Harmful working conditions;

  • After eating.

Usually neutrophilia is combined with global leukocytosis in the range of 9-14 * 10 9 / l.

The opposite situation - neutropenia - indicates a depression of the immune system and is fraught with the development of severe infectious conditions. Causes of neutropenia:

  • Past viral diseases (poliomyelitis, measles, rubella, hepatitis);

  • Fungal infection;

  • Toxoplasmosis and other protozoan invasions;

  • Depletion of immunity by chronic infectious and inflammatory processes;

  • Suppression of the red bone marrow during chemotherapy, radiation and cytostatic therapy;

  • Metastatic lesion.

In the general analysis, neutrophils are examined when any signs of inflammation, anemia occur, when antibiotics and any other pharmaceutical drugs that affect the function of hematopoiesis are prescribed, as well as for prophylactic purposes annually.
