How is an MRI of the pelvis done?

For women, the correct functioning of the reproductive and urinary systems is extremely important, and often in the presence of problems, specialists in this field - urologists and gynecologists - find it difficult to make a diagnosis, since laboratory tests, ultrasound and external examination are not sufficiently informative.

An MRI study allows you to get all the data on the state of the pelvic organs, which are necessary for making the correct diagnosis and prescribing effective treatment. It is based on the effect of a powerful but harmless magnetic field and its resonance with the hydrogen atoms that are part of the structure of the human body. This interaction makes it possible to obtain three-dimensional images of the organs under study.

Procedure steps

An MRI study includes the following steps:

  • after removing all objects containing metal from herself, the patient lies down on the tomography table;
  • the table is pushed into the tunnel so that the pelvis is located in the annular part of the tomograph;
  • if necessary, the patient follows the instructions of the radiologist.

On average, the study takes about 30 minutes.
An important point: when scheduling an examination, the doctor will ask you for the day of the cycle, as they do an MRI of the pelvis in women on days when menstruation is absent. It is desirable to undergo an MRI study from 5 to 12 days of the menstrual cycle, 7-9 cycles are considered optimal.

How often can an MRI of the pelvis be done?

In some cases, women have to undergo pelvic MRI multiple times, and it is understandable that they begin to worry about the frequent exposure to magnetic fields. When asked how often an MRI of the pelvis can be done, any radiologist will answer that there is no reason to worry: MRI is a safe and painless type of examination that can be performed repeatedly in the absence of contraindications.
