Postnasal syndrome is characterized as a condition caused by inflammation of the nasal cavity, nasopharynx and paranasal sinuses.

Main complaints

  • stagnation of mucus in the posterior parts of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx;
  • drainage of discharge into the underlying respiratory tract;
  • chronic cough;

Symptoms and pathogenesis of postnasal syndrome

The most common causes of postnasal drip: vasomotor and allergic rhinitis, post-infectious rhinitis. There may also be pharyngitis phenomena associated with the draining of pathological secretions along the posterior pharyngeal wall, breathing through the mouth, anemic effect on the mucous membrane of the posterior pharyngeal wall with abuse of vasoconstrictor drugs.

Diagnostics

  • primary otorhinolaryngological examination;
  • microbiological examination of the discharge of the nasopharynx;
  • endoscopic examination of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx;
  • computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx

Patients with typical complaints in the absence of ENT pathology should be examined for the presence of gastroesophageal and laryngopharyngeal reflux - their treatment can reduce the manifestations of postnasal syndrome.

Treatment of postnasal syndrome

Complex. Taking into account the revealed pathology, surgical or drug correction is performed. It is necessary to get rid of all, even insignificant ENT pathology. With the right approach and complete diagnosis, the effectiveness of treatment is quite high and allows you to achieve a significant improvement in the quality of life.
