What is a hearing aid

Hearing aids used to restore hearing have the ability to collect, amplify and modify sounds.

Each such device consists of three elements. The telephone (speaker) presses on the eardrum, thereby creating sound waves. The amplifier increases the strength and quality of the sound signal. The microphone converts environmental sounds into electrical signals.

There are 3 types of hearing aids:

  • Behind the ear. The simplest devices. They are intended for open prosthetics with an external receiver.
  • Intra-ear. Such devices are placed directly in the external auditory canal. This allows them to transmit amplified sound directly to the eardrum. These devices are very small, almost invisible.

There are also in-canal devices on the market. They are placed inside the ear canal and remain invisible to outsiders.

What is a hearing aid

What is prosthetics?

Implant prosthetics involves inserting part of the device directly into the middle or inner ear. This method is used in cases where traditional devices do not provide the desired result - for example, in the presence of chronic ear diseases.

Hearing prosthetics can be either monoural (for one ear) or binaural (for both ears). The second type of procedure is relevant for symmetrical hearing loss.

The main indication for selecting a hearing aid is hearing impairment of more than 30 dB. This procedure has no specific contraindications, but you must first undergo an examination.

Diagnosis

The initial stage of diagnosis is otoscopy. It allows the doctor to examine the external auditory canal and eardrum using a special instrument - an otoscope. The procedure is painless and does not cause discomfort. It helps to assess the condition of the ear and determine the presence of inflammation, wax plugs and other abnormalities. For detailed study, a variety of funnels and magnifying lenses are used.

In order to clarify the condition of the middle ear, as well as to determine the functionality of the auditory system, the doctor additionally refers the patient to impedance audiometry, tympanometry and registration of otoacoustic emissions.

Hearing aid process

Based on the data obtained, the audiologist selects the most suitable hearing aid. Then the device parameters are finely tuned for a specific user. This guarantees a comfortable perception of sounds in a variety of conditions.

At the last stage, the specialist teaches the patient how to properly use the device and care for it.
